She loved spending her free time exploring the beautiful woods around her house. She first visited Japan at the age of 13, and was intrigued by how different everything was to her own upbringing. During high school, while also being involved in jazz dance, cheerleading, musical theater, and symphony band, she came to Japan again as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student in Osaka. She went on to major in Japanese at Michigan State University and completed a term of study abroad in Shiga Prefecture with a scholarship. After university, Joy moved to Japan to work as an English teacher. She has also done television and movie work, translation, and has volunteered her time including several trips to the Tohoku region after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and offering support to Ukrainian refugees in Japan. Joy has loved musicals ever since she can remember, which she attributes to watching with her mother from a very early age.
